Would highly recommend…..

I would Rate Appointment as a 10/10 and so therefore would highly recommend you.  I found both staff members Lynn, and Christine to be very friendly, most welcoming, and personable which is quite important to me.

Christine was most informative during the process of her working on my teeth.  The ambience of your office being a heritage building is lovely.  I thoroughly appreciated the experience of coming to your clean, quiet, non frenetic and professional environment.  I also really enjoyed the great selection of herbal teas that we could help ourselves to…which only added to the relaxed atmosphere.  Looking forward to my next appointment.  Need I say more!!!

Sincerely,

Chrysoula

Share a Smile 2016 – A Big Success

Heather Cooper and the Share a Smile team are back from their dental mission to the Nootka Sound area.  The trip was a big success.

A team of four dental hygienists set up clinics first in Kyuquot, then moved on to Esperanza/Zeballos and finally to Tahsis.  The hygienists provided 2 free clinic days in each of these remote areas to give all the people in the communities a chance to receive free dental hygiene treatment.  This treatment also included fissure sealants, IST (long term temporary restorations) and dental health education when needed.

Watch for pictures from this dental mission.

Best ever!!! Rave Rave Rave…

I have never had a better experience. I really didn’t think Lindsey could get the staining off my teeth. They were Really bad. Not only do they look better now than ever… There was no scraping!! She used a different technique and a sprayer with salt and baking soda which is way less abrasive and worked so much better! She has excellent ‘bed side manner?’ and we had nice chat about stuff. So nice. Always making sure I was ok with everything and asking if I needed a rinse or anything. When she showed me my teeth I just about cried and wanted to hug her. The other way with the scraping always left my teeth with tiny ridges I could feel with my tongue. And never got everything off. My teeth feel the smoothest ever today. And they’re clean! Stains I had for years and I thought were cavities actually. I can’t rave about this service enough though I don’t think I’m allowed that many words lol. I’m amazed. Was treated promptly and professionally and just plain nicely! Didn’t get the name of the lady at the desk but she was really nice too. I will recommend Lindsey and this company to everyone I know. I’m moving away but when I come back to visit I hope Lindsey still works there. I will be returning. Seriously. Best ever. Rave rave rave. Go see them. You won’t be disappointed. Oh and it wasn’t even expensive!! So worth it. It’s your mouth. Your smile means so much. I can smile again without hiding my teeth. My confidence has shot up so high. I’d pay twice their price just to feel and look like I do today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Friendly, Professional Service

During the past 6 years Harbour City Dental Hygiene has impressed me by their friendly & professional service.

Prior to discovering this company I’d assumed my teeth & gums we’re fated to hurt during and after each cleaning.  However, ever since my first appointment at Harbour City Dental Hygiene I have found no dental pains at all.  No painful experiences during or after these cleanings has made it much more easy for me to keeping my regular appointments booked.  My teeth & gums feel great long after each session.

I highly recommend them & even look forward to my own next visit.

Organic Weed Killer

2 Cups Multi Purpose Epsom Salt (or sea salt)
1 Gallon Vinegar (pickle juice works, too)
1/4 Cup Dish Soap

Mix well, but don’t shake (bubbles).  Spray generously on all parts of the weeds on a warm hot day. Drench the leaves with liquid.  This works well for areas in stone or brick patios where you don’t want grass or weeds.  Be careful not to spray any treasured plants.  Cover nearby plants with newspaper to protect them from overspray.

Don’t need a gallon of it?  Reduce the recipe to 2 cups vinegar, 1 tbsp. salt and 1 tbsp soap.  The ratio isn’t that important.  The vinegar does the killing.  The soap strips the protective oils and helps the vinegar stick to the broad leaves, and the salt remains in the soil to prevent regrowth.

National Dental Hygienists Week 2013

Harbour City Dental Hygiene celebrated National Dental Hygienists Week™/Oral Health Month by providing custom fitted mouth guards for the spring football program at John Barsby Community School in Nanaimo, BC.

Over 60 students between the ages of 14 and 18 had impressions made by the hygienists from Harbour City Dental Hygiene and volunteers from the VIU Dental Hygiene Program during National Dental Hygienists Week™. The mouth guards were fabricated and ready for the first training camp on April 21st.

The students were eager to learn how the mouth guards protect their teeth, gums and jaws in sports related injuries.  They gained an understanding of how important it is to wear their mouth guard during practice and non-competitive play as well as official games.

5 facts about stress

DON’T THINK YOU HAVE STRESS? THINK AGAIN.

If you think only tragic events or major catastrophes cause stress, you’re wrong. If you drive a car, pay bills, or have a job, chances are you frequently suffer the consequences of stress. Nobody is stress-free, and what you may not know about stress is that it could wreak havoc on your health. Statistics show that nearly 75 percent of all illnesses are caused by stress-related factors! It’s impossible to eliminate stress from our lives, which is why educating ourselves about the complications of stress and the toll it takes on our bodies could go a long way to improving our overall health.

1. It contributes to weight gain.

Nearly 70 percent of us are overweight or obese—an increase of 15 percent over the past 10 years! Is it stress? Quite possibly. Medical research shows that our bodies react to stress by releasing the stress hormone cortisol. When our adrenal glands produce too much cortisol under stressful situations, we may develop weight gain, especially around the abdomen, commonly called belly fat. This happens when the oversecretion of cortisol moves fat from storage deposits that are more easily burned off and relocates it to fat cell deposits deep in the abdomen.

2. It makes you sick.

Stress doesn’t just rule our thoughts. It delivers a crushing blow to our bodies, weakening the immune system and making us more susceptible to disease and illness. Medical experts agree it’s not all in our heads. “The mind clearly can have a profound effect on every aspect of physiological functioning,” says James Gordon, M.D., Director of the Center for Mind-Body Studies in Washington, DC. “Individuals who are chronically pessimistic, angry or anxious are clearly more susceptible to illness, including heart disease and cancer.” Just as important as controlling your stress levels is making sure your body is getting the nutrition it needs to beef up your internal defenses.

3. It causes headaches.

“Stress headaches” can be caused by changes in the way the brain interprets pain signals from the muscles in the head, neck and shoulders that are under more strain when we’re stressed. This tensing of the muscles can result in headaches and even migraines. If you feel as though you’re worrying too much about certain things in your life, take a time out. Clear your head. It’s a heck of a lot better than spending the next three days in your bed with the curtains closed and the lights off. Focus on relaxing techniques—and give your head a break.

4. It makes you moody.

Individuals coping with stress can become very temperamental and often suffer from mood swings. That’s because when we are experiencing considerable stress, our bodies are physically depleted and we have less energy available to handle even ordinary hassles and tasks, which fuels irritability. Studies show that when our energy levels are exhausted from stress we become less sociable, more withdrawn and are likely to demonstrate moody behavior.

5. It keeps you awake.

Stress is the leading cause of sleep deprivation. It’s easy to lose several hours of valuable sleep tossing and turning in bed as we worry and analyze all the problems we’re dealing with. Beyond the obvious fallout of too little sleep—next-day drowsiness—there are several other consequences. These include lack of focus, short-term memory loss and impaired ability to drive a motor vehicle, just to name a few.

4 Reasons to Chew Your Food More

Chew Your Food, Change Your Life

When it comes to increased health, it’s not just what we eat but how we eat. Digestion actually begins in the mouth, where contact with our teeth and digestive enzymes in our saliva break down food. But these days most of us rush through the whole eating experience, barely acknowledging what we’re putting in our mouths.

We eat while distracted—working, reading, talking and watching television—and swallow our food practically whole. On average we chew each bite only eight times. It’s no wonder that many people have digestive problems.

4 Reasons to Chew Your Food More

1. Your saliva is your friend

Saliva breaks down food into simple sugars, creating a sweet taste. The more we chew, the sweeter our food becomes, so we don’t crave those after-meal sweets. You have three pairs of saliva glands in your mouth, and they each produce a different kind of saliva. The body knows how much saliva to produce, and what kind. That’s why your saliva glands will produce much more saliva when you eat a dry cracker than when you eat a juicy piece of fruit!

2. Easier digestion

Chewing reduces digestive distress and improves assimilation, allowing our bodies to absorb maximum nutrition from each bite of food. The power of chewing is so great that there are stories of concentration camp survivors who, when others could not, made it through with very little food by chewing their meager rations up to 300 times per bite of food. For most of us 300 chews is a daunting and unrealistic goal. However, you can experience the benefits of chewing by increasing to just 30 chews per bite. Proper chewing will help make sure your body is digesting your food the best way it can.

3. Healthy mind and body

More chewing produces more endorphins—the brain chemicals responsible for creating good feelings. It’s also helpful for weight loss, because when we are chewing well, we are more apt to notice when we are full. Chewing can even promote increased circulation, enhanced immunity, increased energy and endurance, as well as improve skin health. Poorly digested food means poor absorption of the vitamins and nutrients that the foods you are eating provide.!

4. Enjoy your meal

Taking time with a meal, beginning with chewing, allows for enjoyment of the whole experience of eating: the smells, flavors and textures. It helps us to give thanks, to show appreciation for the abundance in our lives and to develop patience and self-control.

Try eating without the TV, computer, Blackberry, newspaper or noisy company. Instead, just pay attention to the food and to how you are breathing and chewing. This kind of quiet can be disconcerting at first, since we are used to a steady stream of advertising, news, media, email and demands from others. But as you create a new habit, you will begin to appreciate eating without rushing. You have to eat every day—why not learn to savor and enjoy it?

5 Ways Xylitol Improves Your Dental Health

1. Xylitol reduces the risk of cavities

Cavities are typically formed when there is a highly acidic environment in the mouth. This can occur through many different means, including eating and/or drinking acidic beverages and foods (mostly sweets) and fermentable carbohydrates (breads, pasta); using products that are high in alcohol content, contain sugar or are acidic in nature; or simply by failing to remove the bacteria which thrives in this environment. The presence of xylitol has an effect on this acidic environment by bringing the pH to a safe and neutral level, thereby reducing the risk of decay. In fact, studies have clearly demonstrated that regular use of xylitol in dental products can reduce tooth decay by up to 80 percent.

2. Xylitol keeps your mouth moist and healthy

Xylitol actually encourages healthy salivary flow, which is instrumental in washing away food particles. This not only aids in keeping the mouth cleaner, it promotes longer-lasting fresh breath by bathing your teeth and tissues. Increasing salivary production is especially important for people suffering with dry mouth, which can be caused from aging, illness, cancer treatment and medications.

3. Xylitol repairs enamel

Xylitol can actually help build stronger, healthier teeth by restoring essential minerals to the tooth structure. With a healthy neutral pH and salivary flow, calcium and phosphate ions are freely delivered to the enamel — including areas of weakened enamel. These minerals support the tooth in repair and remineralization. In fact, research has shown a reversal of early stages of damage to the enamel with a prolonged use of xylitol.

4. Xylitol has fewer calories … how sweet it is

Xylitol has 40 percent fewer calories than sugar and all the great taste. That makes xylitol a great alternative for anyone dieting, watching their caloric intake or who simply prefers a healthy alternative to sugar. Xylitol is also an ideal sugar substitute for those with diabetes due to its low Glycemic Index-making it ideal for maintaining steady levels of insulin and blood sugar.

5. Xylitol is a safe and unique alternative to fluoride

Xylitol is naturally occurring and found in many fruits and vegetables including berries and mushrooms. Xylitol has been used in Europe as a popular sugar substitute since the 1970s and has been approved for use in over 35 countries. Due to the controversial attention fluoride has received over the years there are those who prefer an alternative in their home care products. Xylitol has given us that option.

Posted in Did you know?, Health News, Oral Health Facts | Leave a comment

The Sweet truth about Xylitol

Dental decay (cavities) remains a significant childhood disease affecting nearly 20 percent of children between the ages of two to four. By age 17, nearly 80 percent of young adults have had a cavity and over two-thirds of adults age 35 to 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth due to dental decay. Dental decay has been shown to be an infectious transmissible disease, resulting in damage to the enamel by acid-forming bacteria found in plaque, biofilm (bacteria) and in the presence of sugar.

The good news is as we educate, increase access to care and explore home care products and protocols that encourage the removal of this harmful bacteria, we will continue to make progress in ending the “silent epidemic” of dental disease. One such area that is gaining increased attention by dental professionals is incorporating the use of xylitol-based products in a daily home care regimen.
